Leaders from the Kakamega Town Friends Church (Quakers) have issued a call for peace and raised awareness through a peace walk in Kakamega town, under the theme “Investing heavily in peace for everyone, everywhere, every day.”
Led by Pastor Joseph Shamala, Erick Lijodi and Edgah Lugali, the latter being the deputy chairman of the Peace Committee at the Kakamega Friends Church, the group gathered at the Nabongo Friends Church premises. They noted that the church observes this peace day every September 21st to sensitize locals about peace, particularly as the general election approaches, to prevent any unrest.
“For us to move on swiftly as residents in business, education, and other services, peace must prevail.” Edgar Lugalia emphasized

Pastor Shamala took the opportunity to urge leaders not merely to visit the church but to actively participate and offer support where needed. Friends Church fellowships and leaders created awareness in town by walking on Monday, 21st September 2026
Linet Kisaka, the Women’s Representative at Nabongo Friends Church in Kakamega, stated that the church has already begun identifying early warning signs of danger in the country. She cited the example of their traditional two-finger salute; they have stopped using it due to the prevailing political tensions in the nation.
“We have been using our two-finger salute as a pillar of peace, but because of the tension of one-term and two-term factions, we sensed it could bring havoc, so we withdrew.” Said Linet.
She further highlighted the issue of youths being used as hooligans in local areas, criticizing political leaders for paying young people to cause trouble and engaging in divisive regional politics instead of uniting all citizens. She also called on women to be ambassadors of peace in the society since they are always available and reliable.
Furthermore, Ian Bahati, the youth leader at the very church, has urged the youth to be ambassadors of peace as the election approaches and to avoid being manipulated by politicians .
“We have learned a lot during our peace walk. As a youth leader in Kakamega Friends Church and also a peace ambassador, I urge fellow youths to choose peace and avoid manipulations from politicians to cause havoc.” Bahati advised.
