Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya on Monday, September 7, 2026, held a high-level consultative meeting with over 22 Members of Parliament from Western Kenya in Kisumu, in what is seen and termed as a fresh push for regional unity towards the 2027 general elections.

According to CS Oparanya, the engagement focused on critical regional development priorities, emerging economic opportunities, and the broader interests of the people of Western Kenya, with a strong emphasis on the need for leaders to work together to strengthen the region’s political voice. In a statement shared through his official Facebook and X accounts on Monday evening after the meeting, Oparanya said Western Kenya must develop a common agenda capable of translating its vast human, agricultural, and economic potential into fundamental and greater opportunities for its people. ”We deliberated on the region’s development agenda, economic empowerment, and the need to speak in one voice as we prepare for the future,” Oparanya stated. The meeting brought together MPs from Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and Trans Nzoia counties, with CS Oparanya seated at the center leading the deliberations. The leaders resolved to prioritize issues affecting the common ‘mwananchi,’ including revival of the sugar sector, value addition, support for MSMEs, cooperatives, and youth and women’s empowerment.

The Kisumu meeting comes at a time when political realignments are intensifying across the country, with Western Kenya being seen as a critical swing vote region that could determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential contest where some other political analysts allage that some high ranked leaders in Western Kenya act as hypocrites to divide the Luyah nation to give a smooth way for president William Ruto’s in re-election in 2027.
