Something gentle and happy broke the routine beat of footsteps and monitors in the crowded hallways of the Pediatric Surgical Ward at Kenyatta National Hospital. Two tiny birthday cakes were surrounded by staff.
“Happy Birthday Carolyne” was written on one, and “Happy Birthday Roselyn” on the other. On July 31, 2026, the conjoined twin girls would turn two. Carolyne and Roselyn were abandoned at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) as newborns and have lived inside its walls their whole lives. Medical social workers, physicians, and nurses became their family for a full two years. They filled the void left by the parents who never came back, fed them, calmed them, and commemorated each little accomplishment.

The ward had a different vibe on Friday, July 31, 2026. To commemorate the girls’ birthday, staff members who had witnessed their development from frail babies to inquisitive toddlers gathered together, feeling both pleased and a little moved.
Dr. Felix Ochola, a pediatric surgeon, revealed the girls’ next chapter: “The twins will soon leave the hospital for the Mercy Servants of the Poor Home in Kithyoko, Machakos County.” It will be their first time living with other kids. Playing, sharing, and experiencing the daily routines of a family-like setting are essential for their development and emotional maturation, he said.
