Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi visited Malava Constituency to flag off the Last Mile Connectivity Programme (LMCP) in the villages of Lutali (Shirugu-Mugai Ward) and Ikhanyi (South Kabras Ward) in Kakamega County. Over 41,262 households are expected to benefit from the initiative; the project has cost Sh. 300 million in Malava Constituency, while Kakamega County has been allocated Sh. 2.46 billion for the Last Mile Connectivity drive.
Speaking during the launch on Monday, 31st August 2026, CS Wandayi noted that the Western region had for a long time remained in darkness under previous administrations, but development has now been visible in the area under President William Ruto’s government—a sentiment echoed by area MP David Ndakwa.
Furthermore, Wandayi urged the people of Western region to maintain their close partnership with the Nyanza community to foster the unity needed to facilitate future government formation. “Let us walk together so that we can build and strengthen our political muscles, which will enable us to negotiate for power effortlessly,” Wandayi advised.

The event was also attended by Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, who criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for failing to deliver tangible projects in Western Kenya. “Uhuru is a very useless person; he did nothing for the people of Kakamega and the Western region at large during his ten years in power. Yet, in just four years of President Ruto’s tenure, we have seen sustainable projects—such as the revival of Nzoia Sugar and Mumias Sugar Company, as well as roads, water projects, and electricity connections. Ruto is a performer,” Savula said.

He urged residents to support President Ruto’s re-election in 2027, asserting that there is no opposition leader capable of unseating him in the next general election. Other leaders present were, Migori senator Eddy Oketch, MCA’s Butali-Chegulo Kevin Mahelo, for West Kabras Elphas Shalakha, Geoffrey Sikolia Chemuche ward, administrations, residents among other leaders.
