The TSC Letters Scandal,Who is lying to Kenyans?

On August 22, 2026, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula publicly disclosed that Teacher Service Commission (TSC) employment letters are being distributed directly from State House. According to Wetang’ula, President William Ruto hands individual MPs up to ten TSC appointment letters each, intended for teacher employment in their constituencies. “There are some of our MPs that I take to the President and he gives them 10 letters of TSC each, and you hear they have sold them at Sh400k each,” Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has said.

The constitutional violation is stark. Article 237 of Kenya’s Constitution grants the TSC the exclusive mandate to recruit and appoint teachers. Yet Wetang’ula’s own words confirm that this power has been hijacked, appointment letters now come from State House through a political distribution chain, reducing an independent constitutional commission to a tool for political gain. In a firm statement, the Commission clarified that the recruitment and employment of teachers is its sole constitutional mandate –not a political affair. This comes amid concerns over alleged bribery and favouritism in teacher hiring.

TSC says all employment letters are issued through established procedures, not political offices. Meanwhile, Tinderet Member of Parliament (MP) and National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson Julius Melly has demanded evidence of claimed political interference and the sale of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) jobs, saying Parliament will investigate credible complaints.

Melly said the Education Committee would not tolerate the sale or distribution of TSC employment letters by politicians or other individuals, following claims that some MPs receive appointment letters for distribution to constituents.

“We cannot, and my committee cannot condone the sale or distribution of letters by anyone, be it a member of Parliament, be it a senior citizen,” Melly said on a local TV station on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

Now the question remains who is telling the truth and who is lying to Kenyans, as thousands of teachers continue graduating every year, joining the job market knowing that you have to know and be aligned to a particular person for you to be employed by TSC.
