Kakamega school team shaking hands with their rivals before the game at Sudi stadiumWestern Region Secondary School games started on Wednesday, 8th July to 11th July in Bungoma County, bringing together different teams across the region fighting to be crowned western champions in order to represent the region at the national level.
In football games, the final boys brought together Kakamega school versus Musingu Boys, both from Kakamega County, where Kakamega School emerged victorious after defeating Musingu Boys with two goals to nil. The game ended in extra time after a barren draw in normal time. Fidel Odhiambo opened the scoring with a thunderous bullet header, rising highest to power home a pinpoint corner from Brighton Nacheri before Daniel Ombati doubled the lead to seal their title.
In the girls category, Archbishop Njenga Girls won the final after defeating reigning champions Butere Girls in the final that was a Kakamega County affair. Archbishop Njenga Girls opened the scoring in the first half, but the Butere Girls found an equalizer, and ABN struck again in the last minutes of the game to make it 2:1 and secure the western region championship trophy.
In volleyball, the boys from Malava High School (Kakamega County) won against Chesamisi boys from Bungoma County with three sets to nil, securing the trophy and booking their space in the national championships. While Mwitoti Girls High School (Kakamega County) won the girls category after defeating Lugulu Girls from Bungoma County with 3 sets to nil.
Basketball Boys Nambale (Busia) and Sigalame (Busia) both qualified for the national championship after reaching the final, as well as Tigoi Girls High School (Vihiga) and Cardinal Otunga Girls High School (Bungoma). Both qualified in the 3×3 basketball category for girls.
In rugby boys, Bokoli (Bungoma) emerged victorious after defeating Butula (Busia) with 14 to nil, but they will all represent the region at the national level, while in the girls category, Mbakalo Girls (Bungoma County) defeated Kimobo Girls (Bungoma) 24 to 7; all qualified for the national championships.
Netball Girls: St. Monica Bukokholo Girls from Bungoma West Sub-county, Bungoma County, were crowned Western Region champions after beating their fierce rivals Bumala 50-43, booking their slot in the national championship.
In conclusion, Bungoma County leads with the total number of qualified teams for the national championship, which will be held in Thika with 5 teams, followed by Kakamega with 4, Busia County with 3, and Vihiga County will be represented by 1.
